Community Service Policy for Mechanical Engineering Department

As part of our commitment to fostering well-rounded individuals who contribute positively to society, the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Engineering & Technology Lahore, New Campus, recognizes the importance of engaging engineering students in community service activities. Community service not only enriches the lives of others but also enhances the personal and professional development of our students. Therefore, this policy outlines the requirements and guidelines for community service participation by undergraduate students of Mechanical Engineering.

Objectives:

 The objectives of this policy are to:

  1. Cultivate a sense of social responsibility and civic engagement among BSME students.
  2. Provide students with opportunities to apply their engineering skills and knowledge to address community needs.
  3. Foster collaboration, teamwork, and leadership skills outside of the academic environment.
  4. Enhance students’ understanding of real-world challenges and the impact of engineering solutions on communities.
Policy Statement:

Students enrolled in Mechanical Engineering program are required to complete a minimum number of community service hours as part of their degree requirements. The community service requirement aims to complement students’ academic studies with practical experiences that contribute to the betterment of society.

Requirements:
  1. Minimum Hours: Each engineering student must participate in the community service over the duration of their bachelor’s degree program.
  2. Types of Service: Community service activities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Volunteer work with non-profit organizations focused on environmental conservation, disaster relief, education, or social welfare.
    • Participation in engineering-related projects that address community needs, such as infrastructure development, renewable energy initiatives, or accessibility improvements.
    • Mentoring or tutoring students from underprivileged backgrounds in STEM subjects.
    • Participation in outreach programs aimed at promoting STEM education and career paths to local schools or communities.
    • Apart from these a list of community service activities is also attached at the end of the document.
  3. Approval Process: Prior to engaging in community service activities, students must submit a proposal outlining their intended service project, including the organization or group they plan to work with, the proposed activities, and the expected outcomes. Proposals will be reviewed and approved by the departmental community services committee (preferably consisting of class councillors).
  4. Documentation: Students are required to maintain accurate records of their community service activities, including dates, hours served, tasks completed, and any reflections or insights gained. Documentation must be submitted to the departmental community services committee upon completion of each service project.
  5. Evaluation: The quality and impact of students’ community service efforts will be evaluated based on their adherence to the approved proposal, their level of engagement and contribution, and the feedback received from the benefiting community or organization.
  6. Completion Deadline: All community service requirements must be fulfilled by the end of each semester. Failure to meet this deadline may result in delays in degree conferral.
Support and Resources:
  • Mechanical Engineering Department will provide support and resources to assist students in identifying suitable community service opportunities, developing project proposals, and reflecting on their experiences.
  • Faculty advisors and mentors will be available to guide students throughout the community service process, offering advice and assistance as needed.

In line with our department’s commitment to environmental sustainability, the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Engineering & Technology Lahore, New Campus, annually organizes a plantation drive. This initiative aims to promote environmental consciousness and active participation among students, faculty, and staff. 2.    Smog Awareness

The Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Engineering & Technology Lahore, New Campus, has been actively involving students in raising awareness about smog as part of their community service efforts.
